The Allen County Alternative Program was founded on the principle that every student can learn. Our purpose is to provide structure to assist students who are at risk of not graduating in order to meet State of Ohio graduation requirements yet is flexible enough to meet the individual needs of the student. Attending the Alternative Program provides opportunities for students to advance to the next grade level instead of repeating grades as a result of chronic discipline referrals, poor attendance, and/or academic failure. With the collaboration of our member school districts, the Allen County Juvenile Court, and the Family Resource Center, the Alternative Program has continued to evolve in the delivery of evidence-based practices for at-risk children. The Alternative Program provides smaller classroom sizes, hands-on learning, life skills development, and mental health services. Success is determined by several factors including improved attendance and attitude, earning high school credits, attaining the confidence to return to the home school or the Apollo Career Center at the completion of placement and/or graduation from the home school.

Students must be referred by their home school district. Parents requesting placement are referred back to the home school district for approval.
The Alternative Program is not intended for students on IEPs. IEP students must be approved by the Alternative supervisor in order to make sure his/her accommodations and modifications can be met in a non-traditional setting.

The Short Term Program is intended as a temporary placement not to exceed 10 days in lieu of an out-of-school suspension. The program targets Allen County students in grades 6-12 who have violated their home school district's code of conduct. It is discipline-focused and students are not permitted to socialize during their time assigned to the program. Students work independently under the direct supervision of a monitor.
The home school district provides academic work for the students. Students receive credit for work completed allowing the student an opportunity to stay current with his/her class. Days in the Short Term Program are counted as days in attendance at the home school.

Credit Recovery is an excellent opportunity for students to take high school courses previously failed and receive credit toward graduation. Using the A+ny Where Learning System, the student completes his/her coursework on-line, one class at a time with the assistance of a paraprofessional or teacher in the classroom. The A+ curriculum provides assessment tools to match skill levels of all students, whether on a developmental, remedial, or enhanced learning track. The curriculum utilizes study guides, practice exercises, mastery tests, and essays. The paraprofessional/ teacher meets weekly with the student to review his/her progress and time line.

The Long Term Program targets students in grades 9-10. Students receive direct instruction in the core curriculum. Class size is limited and a focus is placed on the student developing/increasing classroom skills needed to return to his/her home school at the completion of the year.
Before a student is placed into the program, a meeting is held with the home school's administrator and/or guidance counselor to coordinate services and to initiate the "Intake" interview. A student and his parents/guardians are interviewed to determine the student's goals and to discuss the expectations of the Alternative Program. The student takes an active role in his/her admission to the program. This strategy empowers the student toward making a successful change recognizing that previous behaviors were not successful. An individual plan is developed and targets the student for success. Short term and long term goals are established.
An "Exit" interview is held for each student ready to transition back to his/her home school. Goals, skills learned, accomplishments and strategies are considered and a plan for successful integration is agreed upon. The student is encouraged to take advantage of supportive services available within the community.
