For Parents: A Place to Start

Welcome Parents!   There are many resources to help you understand your child and to find opportunities to meet his or her needs.  The Ohio Association for Gifted Children (OAGC) www.oagc.com is the premier parent/teacher organization that serves as a support for sharing information, providing professional development, and is the leader in advocacy efforts for gifted issues.  The Ohio Department of Education's website has gifted listed under "Learning Supports," although you can also type "gifted" in the search bar.  Their website is www.ode.state.oh.us.  You can find Ohio law, Gifted Operating Standards, and other pertinent legal information at the gifted link.  The following is the link to the Operating Standards.  The technical manual allows you to see the intent of each part of the standards and the practical application.  It is very helpful.  http://www.ode.state.oh.us/GD/Templates/Pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3&TopicRelationID=503&ContentID=7642&Content=77583

The irony of Ohio's legal system for gifted is there is no law that gifted children must be served in any formal capacity in the schools, but they must be identified.  There are good things coming for gifted students, particularly at the high school level with the new credit flexibility initiative on the agenda for the 2010-2011 school year, but we still have work to do to provide for a seamless system of services K - 12.
