Seventeen Allen County Schools were represented at the 31st annual Allen County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 22, 2020. The bee was hosted and sponsored by OSU-Lima, under the gracious organization of Bryan Albright, Assistant Dean, and the excellent pronouncing skills of Mike Miller. It was conducted in Room 100 of the Life and Physical Sciences building. The Allen County ESC is most grateful for this comfortable setting and conducive environment to conduct the bee.
All spellers received certificates and participant trophies. The champion was presented with a $100 gift card. 1st Runner-up received a $75 gift card. 2nd Runner-up received a $50 gift card. All three were given striking acrylic trophies to commemorate their accomplishment, thanks to our OSU-Lima sponsor.
Runners-up came to represent their schools in case their champion could not participate and received spelling bee certificates and spelling bee cupcakes.
Participation in a spelling bee increases a student's vocabulary, spelling skills, learning concepts and helps to develop correct English usage. Scripp's Howard has a rich website full of lists of words along with appropriate challenges to help our young spellers develop these academic skills. Vocabulary knowledge is foundational to all other academic content areas so it is a valuable skill to develop.
Champion Speller this year was Catherine Myers - St. Charles Catholic School (center photo)
1st Runner-Up was Alexandra Greer - Temple Christian School
2nd Runner-Up was Aaron Bockey - Delphos St. John's
We are proud to know we have so many good spellers in Allen County!
