Parent Mentor

Parent Mentor Program

A Parent Mentor is a parent of a child with a disability who has knowledge about special education and area agencies. They provide free peer to peer support to other families of children with disabilities. A Parent Mentor uses their first hand experiences to work with families and their school districts to support successful student outcomes. This is a grant funded program from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce with ongoing professional development provided by The Ohio State University. Parent Mentor services are provided for free to families in Allen County.

How Can I Help?

  • I help families understand the rights and responsibilities of families, students and schools

  • I attend meetings with families when their child is eligible or may be eligible for special education

  • I host information sessions based on the needs of families and districts

  • I connect families and educators with area agencies and organizations that support students with disabilities
